We’ve gotten a lot of high-style spy movies in the last couple of years (the best being Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), so I was excited to see director Anton Corbijn try to tackle the subject again after his wayward attempt at intrigue with The American. This is a perfectly acceptable thriller and the cast seems relatively engaged in elevating the script, especially the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his last roles. Hoffman plays it cooly and with real confidence, not the trumped up bravado that any other actor would bring to this character. While I still miss the brilliance we got a glimpse of in Control, Corbijn delivers a decent picture with A Most Wanted Man, and I’m still a believer that he will make another great film someday.
