“Underwater Harvey” was presented in the “Dear MKE” shorts program at the Milwaukee Film Festival on October 9, 2014. I will be reviewing each short – most under five minutes in length – and gauging whether they are worthy of expansion into a longer-form short or feature.
One of the few shorts included in the Dear MKE program that was obviously positioned as a commercial for Film Festival sponsors rather than earnestly painting a portrait of one of Milwaukee’s treasured attributes. I feel like the subject, the Freshwater Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was definitely worth a look but unfortunately it came out looking more like a recruitment video than an ode to the department’s tireless work. Makes you wonder what this short would have looked like if director Steve Farr, an obviously talented filmmaker, was let off the chain a bit.
