The music biopic is usually underwhelming, and 2014’s entry, Get On Up, which concentrates on the life and music of James Brown, continues in this genre’s grand tradition. As a fan of Brown, it was nice to see someone imitate his performances so flawlessly, but I was ultimately let down by the stories in between. Chadwick Boseman, who played Jackie Robinson in last year’s 42, is obviously a talented actor but he’s disappointed by the script and direction. We are given very little honesty throughout the picture, which is a shame because the more tender and vulnerable moments are fantastic. Nelsan Ellis, who plays Bobby Byrd, provides the nuanced turn that Get On Up desperately needs but it’s not enough to overcome the lackluster storytelling.
